Crab Island History

Crab Island

Is it really an Island?

No, it is not.

However, it IS a place you have to see while vacationing here in Destin, Florida!
The island itself was real and above the water line in the 1900's. It was called Bird Island because of the many species of birds that visited their to feed.

In the year 1974, mother nature paid a visit and now, because of Hurricane Eliose, we have a knee deep "island" of beautiful crystal clear water where people all over the world can visit. The Island is far enough away from land that you can't walk or swim to it. On the South side you have the boat channel, atleast 50 feet deep. Then over on the North, East, and West sides of the island you have water for miles.
You can get there by boat, kayack, or another type of water cruiser.

Although crab island has a reputation for being one of Florida's party staples, it is also a very family friendly location. Locals spend most of their summer Saturdays out there on the water soaking up the sun and spending quality time with their family.

**Fun Fact**
Bring cash with you when you head out there because there are many different boats available just to serve you while you sit back and enjoy the Florida sunshine. Just to name a few, there are floating restaurant eateries, Icecream boats, fresh coconut boats that pop open fresh coconuts for customers to drink, and even a general store in case you forgot something when you left the dock that morning!

It truly is a wonderful site to drive over the Destin Bridge near HarborWalk Village and see thousands of boats out on the island enjoying their day.

No destination is complete without visiting Crab Island, even if it's not a real island.

Come see for yourself!
